Nipissing's talented and knowledgeable group of researchers extends beyond its faculty members to include both undergraduate and graduate students. On Tuesday, March 26, Nipissing highlighted the prowess of its graduate students at its annual Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) in the Nipissing Theatre. This University-wide event challenges graduate students to present their research to a panel of non-specialist judges in an engaging, compelling way, in under three minutes.
This year's first place winner was Rebecca Misiasz for her presentation entitled "The role of coaches in normalizing abusive behaviours towards referees in youth ice hockey". Her research is supervised by Dr. Mark Bruner, Professor of Physical and Health Education in the Nipissing University's Schulich School of Education.
Rebecca will move forward in the 3MT® National Competition representing Nipissing University at the provincial 3MT® competition hosted by Lakehead University (Orillia campus) on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Cade Nolan was named this year's runner up. His presentation, entitled "Empowering First Nations Youth: Exploring Physical Activity, Culture, and Wholistic Well-Being", also won him the evening's People's Choice Award. Cade's research is also supervised by Dr. Bruner.
3MT® was initially developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008 to promote effective communication of research and has evolved into a huge success for Canadian institutions, with over 42 of Canada's graduate schools participating.
Every March, the University celebrates the impact of the diverse research happening at the University and its impact locally, nationally, and internationally through a series of events. 3MT® marked the final event of this series.
Nipissing University is pleased to congratulate all participants of this year's 3MT® competition and wishes Rebecca the best of luck at the national competition.
