ALGOMA UNIVERSITY
Algoma University Student Wins "Best Presentation Award" for innovative IoT Device

June 27, 2024

Mitchell Plunkett, a student at Algoma University's School of Computer Science & Technology, recently won the "Best Presentation Award" at the Leaders of Tomorrow workshop in Toronto. Hosted by IEEE Toronto, IEEE VTS, IEEE Communications Society, and IEEE Young Professionals, this prestigious event recognized Plunkett's groundbreaking project, "PlantInfo".

The "PlantInfo" project focuses on human-plant interaction through an Internet of Things (IoT) device designed to monitor soil moisture levels. The device alerts users via an automated email system when moisture levels are too low, encouraging regular plant care and the associated mental health benefits. The IoT, is a computer network of interrelated devices, sensors and computers that connect and exchange data with other IoT devices, generally using an internet cloud service.

"I was honoured to even be selected to present at the conference, let alone win the best presentation award. I felt very proud to not only represent my hard work, but showcase the level of education I have been receiving at Algoma University and to have that recognized with an award," said Mitchell Plunkett.

Plunkett's project demonstrates the practical application of embedded systems and full-stack web development, highlighting the importance of integrating technology with everyday tasks to enhance quality of life. This achievement reflects the high standard of education at Algoma U and the innovative spirit of its students.
