UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
The University celebrates 50 years as an independent, degree-granting institution

July 3, 2024

For the past 50 years, the University of Regina has been proudly making an impact on citizens across the province and the globe.

While July 1, 2024, officially marks the institution's 50th anniversary, the university's roots go back to 1911, when Regina College was founded by the Saskatchewan Methodist Church. It was home to 27 students on the first day of classes. It became the University of Saskatchewan - Regina Campus in 1961, and 50 years ago, it became the independent, degree-granting institution that it is today - the University of Regina.

Today, the U of R, along with our federated colleges - Campion College, Luther College, and First Nations University of Canada - has more than 16,700 undergraduate and graduate students studying at our dynamic, accessible, safe, and welcoming campuses. The university has become renowned for its world-class research and for providing hands-on learning experience that prepare students for rewarding careers in Saskatchewan and around the world.

"The transformation from the University of Saskatchewan - Regina Campus into today's world-class, independent, post-secondary institution with more than 90,000 alumni is truly astounding, and historic for our province," says Dr. Jeff Keshen, the U of R's eighth President and Vice-Chancellor. "As much as we are celebrating the past 50 years, we are also looking forward to and planning for a bright future - because at 50, we're really just getting started!"

A full year of engaging 50th Anniversary events are planned for alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community members - everyone is welcome! Visit the U of R's 50th Anniversary Info Hub for a full calendar of events, an interactive timeline full of history and great memories, engaging stories, and a photo gallery featuring photos from past and present.
