3rd Edition of “Cree Dictionary of Mathematical Terms with Visual Examples and Sound” Now Available

Dr. Arzu Sardarli and Instructional Designer Ting Zhou completed the project, "Cree Dictionary of Mathematical Terms with Visual Examples and Sound, 3rd edition", with the support of the University of Regina's Open Education and Publishing program. Within the project, conducted in 2024, the project team developed audio files for the Dictionary. This 3rd edition is co-authorized by Dr. Arzu Sardarli and Ida Swan.

The 3rd edition includes definitions and Cree equivalents of more than 170 mathematical terms and audio files. Indigenous artist Larissa Kitchemonia developed the illustrations to visual examples. Kelly Daniels, the Northern Campus Knowledge Keeper from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation, recorded the definitions of terms and their Cree equivalents. Before the recordings started, Kelly Daniels consulted with Elder Norman Rabbitskin. Ida Swan and Lionel Peyachew, Associate Professor with the FNUniv Indigenous Fine Arts program, reviewed the new edition of the Dictionary.

FNUniv President Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann also provided an Endorsement of the Dictionary.

The Open Education and Publishing program hosted the official eBook launch of the 3rd edition via Zoom on November 13, 2024. Dr. Arzu Sardarli, Ida Swan, Ting Zhou, and Kelly Daniels were present to discuss the additions to the Dictionary.

By clicking on the files, readers can listen to the correct pronunciation of mathematical terms in English and Cree. The direct benefit of this project is that it will help students learn mathematical terms and Indigenous language. In addition, it will help Indigenous students feel connected to their culture. The audio files complement the existing texts and visuals, which can improve the accessibility of the material and actively engage learners of different learning preferences. Incorporating audio files will also help individuals with different learning preferences learn more effectively.
