YORK UNIVERSITY
York U's Sustainable Development Goals Report underscores progress in action

January 27, 2025

York University has released its 2024 Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) Report, detailing progress in addressing global challenges through research, innovation and education. The report highlights the University's role in advancing the United Nations' 17 SDGs and maintaining a position among the top 35 institutions globally in the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The report outlines key achievements, including an 82 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from investments, and the protection of over 785 acres of greenspace. These efforts support York's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of its initial target.

Projects featured in the report include the BEST Startup Experience, which fosters student innovation aligned with the SDGs, and the Maloca Community Garden, a living lab, promoting urban agriculture and sustainability. The Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living also engaged more than 1,000 participants in practical sustainability actions since its inception.

York's initiatives addressing equity and inclusion include the Black Youth Housing Project (SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities) and Advancing YU, a mentorship program for Black and women students (SDG 5 - Gender Equality). Research efforts such as studies on biodiversity preservation and water management continue to advance SDGs 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water).

York has also advanced its institutional commitments through the launch of a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy and a Well-Being Strategy, both designed to integrate sustainability and health into all aspects of University life. The signing of the Okanagan Charter further reinforces York's dedication to embedding health promotion and sustainability into its policies and practices.

"York is a global leader in sustainability thanks to the collective efforts of our community," says York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. "Our commitment to sustainability is embodied through groundbreaking research, inclusive educational practices and impactful partnerships that transcend borders and disciplines."

The SDG Report and website showcase how the University Academic Plan and SDG Challenge guide York's leadership in sustainability and its contributions to global and local impact.

Success in achieving sustainable growth is built on a collaborative, institution-wide approach. Taking action, staying involved and contributing to meaningful, positive change can drive lasting impact.
