DALSOLUTIONS
Focusing on research that is making a difference

February 3, 2025

Dalhousie research positively impacts lives in Nova Scotia, Canada and around the world. From innovations that have the power to shift industries and advocacy that improves the care of our most vulnerable to discoveries that have the potential to slow the pace of global warming, our researchers are making a difference.

Enter DalSolutions a new editorial series showcasing the tangible impact of Dalhousie's research in the communities it serves. At its heart lies a commitment to celebrating the human connections and collaborations that make progress possible, with a particular focus on Nova Scotia, where research meets the needs of those closest to home.

"Our research community is delivering real solutions whether it's as a global leader in ocean and environmental science helping to fight climate change, through research commercialization that contributes to our regional and national economies, by influencing policy to improve equity and support civil society, or through discoveries that improve our well-being and longevity," says Kim Brooks, Dalhousie's president and vice-chancellor.

"By telling the story of how our researchers are working in and with the community, we hope to strengthen our bonds with the people we are here to serve and to celebrate our shared successes."

Today marks the launch of the DalSolutions editorial hub, featuring six stories that exemplify research with a purpose research that is changing lives and helping to shape the world for the better:

  • Easing pain for children: New guidance for healthcare workers promises to improve how pain is managed for children undergoing medical procedures.

  • A wastewater revolution: A groundbreaking discovery poised to transform wastewater treatment globally.

  • Empowering pharmacists: Research enabling Nova Scotian pharmacists to prescribe HIV prevention drugs, improving access for those who need it most.

  • Supporting survivors of abuse: A researcher embedded in Nova Scotia's healthcare system is creating processes to identify and support women experiencing intimate partner violence.

  • Powering the future: An entrepreneur is tackling India's electric scooter market with battery technology and mentorship from Dalhousie.

  • Leading in climate innovation: A hydrologist's carbon dioxide removal innovation has earned her startup international recognition, including a feature on the front page of The New York Times.

This is just the beginning. Each month, DalSolutions will share new stories of how Dalhousie researchers are pursuing tangible solutions to important challenges at home and around the world. Upcoming features will explore how our researchers are revolutionizing care for heart disease, building systems to improve health-care efficiency in Nova Scotia, enhancing access to mental-health services in the province, and much more.
