MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY
McMaster Continuing Education appoints Ruth Chen acting director

February 20, 2025

McMaster University has appointed Ruth Chen acting director of McMaster Continuing Education (MCE) while the search for a permanent director is underway.

Chen brings extensive leadership experience in professional and continuing education, faculty development, and technology-enhanced learning.

Ruth Chen will support instructors and staff at MCE until a permanent director is hired to succeed Lorraine Carter, who retires this month.

Her appointment follows the retirement of Lorraine Carter this month, after nine years leading MCE.

"I am confident that Ruth's experience and leadership will ensure a smooth transition and continued success for MCE," said Susan Tighe, provost and vice-president (Academic).

"I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation for Lorraine's dedication and commitment to MCE. Under her leadership, the focus on developing programs that are relevant and responsive to societal needs strengthened McMaster's role in workforce development and community enrichment."

Chen, an associate professor in the School of Nursing, has served as the associate dean of Continuing Professional Development in the Faculty of Health Sciences since July.

"I am happy to serve McMaster and MCE in this acting capacity," Chen said.

"MCE is a leader in providing high-quality learning experiences and has a long history of serving the community with accessible and innovative continuing education.

"I look forward to supporting the excellent work of the MCE staff, instructors, and leadership team and facilitating the transition for an incoming MCE director."

Chen's previous leadership roles at McMaster include assistant dean, Academic Resources; education coordinator for the School of Nursing; and assistant dean of faculty development for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

In this new role, Chen will support MCE's staff and instructors while ensuring continuity in the delivery of high-quality learning opportunities.

"McMaster Continuing Education plays a vital role in fostering lifelong learning and expanding access to education," said Catherine Anderson, acting vice-provost, Teaching and Learning.

"Ruth's leadership experience, dedication to innovation, and commitment to student success will be invaluable during this transition.

"Ruth's guidance will ensure that MCE continues to deliver outstanding educational opportunities for learners."

Chen completed a bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, a master's in Nursing at Yale University, and her PhD in Health Research Methodology at McMaster.

Her appointment is in effect from Feb. 3 to Aug. 1, 2025.
