WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY
Laurier's People Make History lecture series returns with March 26 panel on Canada-U.S. relations

March 25, 2025

The History program at Wilfrid Laurier University's Brantford campus presents "Like Sleeping Next to an Elephant," a March 26 panel discussion that will provide historical perspectives on Canada-U.S. relations.

The latest instalment in the History program's People Make History lecture series will feature Professor Lara Campbell from Simon Fraser University; Tim Cook, chief historian and director of research at the Canadian War Museum; and Asa McKercher, Steven K. Hudson Research Chair in Canada-U.S. Relations at St. Francis Xavier University.

"It's a great privilege to host three such esteemed experts for the winter 2025 People Make History lecture," said Associate Professor Geoff Spurr, program chair of History at Laurier's Brantford campus. "With Canada-U.S. relations dominating the headlines, this is a unique opportunity to examine contemporary events through the lens of history."

The free event will be held virtually on Zoom Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. Registration and a Zoom account are required.

The biannual People Make History lecture series is generously supported by the estate of Mary Stedman. Past guest speakers have included Degrassi co-creator Linda Schuyler, former lieutenant-governor James Bartleman, polio survivor Catherine Bell, and Hiroshima survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Setsuko Thurlow.

By sharing their insights, guest speakers bring history alive and make critical links between past and contemporary times.
