The government is providing more than $1.1 million to support student housing plans at the Université de Moncton and the University of New Brunswick (UNB).
"Working with universities and colleges to develop long-term strategies for student housing is an important part of the government's mandate," said Jean-Claude D'Amours, acting minister of post-secondary education, training and labour. "This funding will help the Université de Moncton and UNB determine their student housing needs and costs related to constructing and operating new residences."
The department will provide $555,565 to UNB and $568,900 to the Université de Moncton for feasibility studies, conceptual design work, costing and planning at their campuses around the province.
"I thank the government of New Brunswick for this financial support dedicated to conducting a feasibility study for new student residences," said Denis Prud'homme, president and vice-chancellor of the Université de Moncton. "This important contribution will enable us to do an in-depth analysis of the housing needs on our three campuses in Edmundston, Moncton and Shippagan, and to propose affordable solutions to support the success of our students."
"Thanks to the generous financial support from the government of New Brunswick, we are able to conduct a feasibility study to explore the best ways to create viable and affordable student housing in Fredericton and Saint John," said UNB president and vice-chancellor Paul J. Mazerolle. "Thank you for this support that will greatly benefit our students and communities."
