BCIT's conference helps trades students build financial futures

April 23, 2025

On April 4, BCIT trades students learned about smart financial planning as part of their trades education and how to establish a foundation of financial security and long-term success.

Over 80 students attended the Financial Wellness for Trades Workers Conference led by Anna Lary, Master Electrician and Instructor, School of Construction and the Environment. The half-day conference was made possible through the support of the Rideau Hall Foundation's Catapult Canada program.

Skilled trades offer a practical path to financial independence. With early earning potential, apprentices earn while they learn.  The conference focused on financial literacy, and topics often overlooked in trade-specific education such as funding opportunities and government incentives available to trades students and apprentices.

Students expressed that they found the conference to be highly informative, providing valuable insights on financial literacy, including taxes, grants, and other financial resources. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from experts and gain clarity on topics such as financial independence and career-related funding.

"Financial security is a key component of career success, and this conference directly supports our mission to empower trades workers to achieve both professional and personal independence," said Anna Lary.

"We are grateful for the participation of Tracey Oh, faculty in the School of Business and Media, as well as presenters from Bank of Montreal and Coast Capital for sharing strategies to help participants build sustainable careers, navigate and make informed financial decisions. This event offered an invaluable opportunity to equip students and professionals with the tools they need to manage their finances effectively and build a secure financial future."
