On May 16, UNB Law officially launched Where Leaders Are Made an extraordinary campaign to raise resources that will transform legal education in New Brunswick and beyond. Over the next decade, UNB Law will affirm its place as one of Canada's top law schools, ensuring that it continues to produce outstanding leaders who confront society's toughest challenges.
The Where Leaders Are Made campaign will support four strategic pillars:
- Student support: Needs-based scholarships to ensure every qualified student has access to a UNB Law legal education.
- Classroom experience: Upgrading learning spaces with modern, accessible classrooms and cutting-edge technology.
- Experiential learning: Expanding hands-on training through the Legal Clinic, internships, and the Legal Observatory.
- Research addressing societal challenges: Promoting and expanding policy-oriented and community-based research and introducing a Master of Studies in Law degree.
"Our campaign pillars reflect our core values of promoting student success and fostering a collegial learning and working environment. Above all, they further our obligation as a law school to serve the public interest and promote confidence in the administration of justice," said Michael Marin, Dean of UNB Law.
Enabled by its future downtown location the fully renovated Fredericton Justice Building UNB Law will provide an immersive learning experience that blends classroom and community like nowhere else, positioning it to become Canada's leader in experiential learning.
"With this Campaign, we pay it forward, to support future generations of law students, and to make UNB Law an even more outstanding leader in legal education. When we invest in a bright future for UNB Law, we are investing in ourselves," said Wade MacLauchlan (LLB'81), UNB Law alum and Chancellor of UNB.
During the launch, campaign co-chairs Lydia Bugden and Vaughn MacLellan announced that the campaign had already raised over $13.7 million. Thanks to the support of UNB Law alumni, friends and the legal community, the campaign has achieved 60 per cent of its $23 million goal.
"Our focus is on the future of legal education and on preparing the leaders of tomorrow," said Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle, President and Vice Chancellor of UNB. "With the support of this campaign, UNB Law will create positive change for people in Fredericton, across New Brunswick and beyond."
For generations, UNB Law has produced an inordinate number of extraordinary leaders lawyers, premiers, cabinet ministers, judges, Chiefs and Elders, as well as executives at some of Canada's most prominent institutions. The next chapter of UNB Law will build on this proud history, celebrating past achievements while boldly pursuing new goals for the future.
