NIPPISING UNIVERSITY
Racers ready and set to go for this second annual event

May 26, 2025

Runners of all ages and abilities are invited to lace up for the second annual Look Out Trail Race, set to take place on Saturday, June 14, here on Nipissing University's campus trails. Organized by Nipissing University Fine Arts instructor Colin Davis and local runner Tyler Ashurst, the event is a celebration of North Bay's natural beauty and the welcoming spirit of its running community.

The race features a range of distances to suit different experience levels: 7km, 14km, Half Marathon, and a free 2km Kids Race sponsored by Caisse Alliance North Bay. The course starts on campus just outside the main cafeteria and winds through a scenic and challenging loop toward Duchesnay Falls and the Lookout.

Held for the first time last year, the Look Out Trail Race drew over 130 participants, including enthusiastic kids tackling the cross-country ski hills. Davis, who brings years of race directing experience to the event, says the response in 2024 was overwhelmingly positive.

"The community is excited to welcome a trail running race back to North Bay after a long hiatus," said Davis. "It was clear that locals and visitors alike were excited to join us on the beautiful trails and many locals were introduced to some of the less-travelled sections."

This year, the organizers are building on the event's early success by expanding amenities and partnering with new local sponsors. Nipissing University Accommodations is offering low-cost suite options for out-of-town participants, and Gateway Brewery's new sparkling water brand Oh2Yeah! will be featured in the post-race refreshment area.

"We're expecting around 150 runners this year and a great turnout for the Kid's Race, we have everyone from first-time racers to seasoned ultra-marathoners using the Half as a training run," said Davis.

Beyond the physical challenge, Davis says the Look Out Trail Race is about community connection.

"Running is one of those rare sports where everyone shares the same starting line. We want to enable some magical days for our participants and promote running as a healthy, vibrant, and life-long pursuit," he said.

Registration is now open at northbayroadrace.com. Runners, volunteers, and supporters are welcome to join this growing North Bay tradition.
