YORK UNIVERSITY
Appointment of interim dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies

August 8, 2025

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of a distinguished individual to a key leadership role at York.

Kathryn McPherson

Dr. Kathryn McPherson has been appointed as interim dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS), commencing Sept. 1. Dr. McPherson is a feminist historian of women, work, health and sport, with a focus on the history of nursing. Over her more than 30-year career at York University, she has held numerous leadership roles, including Chair of the School of Women's Studies, director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History, and associate dean, Faculty Affairs in LA&PS.

Most recently, Dr. McPherson served as Chair of the Department of History and co-led York U Forward Action Plan Project #3 on Redesigning the Undergraduate Degree Framework. Dr. McPherson's extensive experience and dedication to academic excellence make her an outstanding choice for this interim role and I thank her for taking on this responsibility while we search for a new dean, LA&PS.

I'd like to thank Dr. J.J. McMurtry once again for his dedication to his work as dean, LA&PS and wish him well as he takes on the exciting new role of president and vice-chancellor of the University of Windsor this fall.

I look forward to working with Dr. McPherson and to the continued success and growth of LA&PS under her leadership.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Lenton
President and Vice-Chancellor
