Wilbert Arends has joined the University of Calgary as vice-president (finance and services) and chief financial officer, bringing nearly three decades of international leadership in finance, infrastructure, and governance.

Wilbert has held senior executive roles across Canada, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Most recently, he served as chief financial officer for LNG Canada, where he led the financial strategy for a USD $30-billion megaproject the largest private sector investment in Canadian history. He previously served as vice-president finance for Shell Australia's Project Prelude, guiding financial management for the execution of the world's first Floating LNG facility. Earlier in his career, Wilbert held senior finance positions with Shell Aviation in Dubai, the Shell Rheinland Refinery in Germany, and the Shell Pernis Refinery in the Netherlands.
He holds an Executive Master of Finance and Control from Rotterdam Erasmus University and a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Groningen. He has also completed executive programs at Harvard Business School, London Business School, and the University of Queensland.
Wilbert is widely recognized for his strategic approach to fiscal stewardship, stakeholder engagement, and people development. Passionate about mentorship, he has coached and supported finance professionals throughout his career, and continues this commitment at UCalgary.
Outside of work, Wilbert serves as a board member with Carya, a Calgary-based family service organization. He is also an active micro-investor in small startups and enjoys photography and outdoor activities.
