CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY
Concordia Continuing Education revamps its French learning program

September 11, 2025

Concordia Continuing Education (CCE) has redesigned its French program, aligning it with the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français, Quebec's official framework that describes and measures adults' French language proficiency levels for learning, work, and integration purposes.

The CCE program, French Communication Essentials, will enhance practical communication skills across five levels, from elementary to high intermediate.

Meeting learners' needs

Formerly known as French Conversation, the updated program focuses on equipping learners with language skills they can confidently use across a variety of contexts. Each course is carefully structured to help participants progressively build their competency in both speaking and understanding French.

"We wanted to make sure our courses truly meet the needs of learners looking to improve their French communication in real contexts," explains Sherry Blok, senior director of development, executive and professional programs.

"By aligning the program with the Échelle québécoise and collaborating closely with Réussir en français at Concordia, we created a program that is both relevant and accessible."

Delivered in person over 10 weeks, the program fosters consistent engagement in a collaborative classroom environment designed to encourage steady progression. To complement in-class learning, participants complete self-directed activities that reinforce skills and prepare them for real-world communication.

Tuition waivers for eligible participants

French Communication Essentials is built with clear outcomes in mind. It builds language proficiency for learners to apply French comfortably in social and professional settings and gain cultural insights to better connect with Quebec society benefits that serve both job seekers and those looking to integrate more fully into the community.

This program is particularly valuable for professionals working in French-speaking environments and is also open to Concordia faculty and staff, aligning with the university's commitment to encourage a bilingual campus culture.

Eligible faculty and staff may also benefit from a tuition waiver, while students who have previously completed an undergraduate or graduate course at Concordia receive a 10 per cent discount.

Practical assessments and outcomes

Thanks to its connection with the Échelle québécoise, learners can assess and demonstrate their proficiency level with accuracy an important asset for professional and academic advancement.

With a focus on French through thematic topics that facilitate practical and applied communication, French Communication Essentials will help learners not only speak French, but use it with ease and purpose.
