Bishop's University Celebrates the Official Opening of its Psychology Clinic

September 24, 2025

Bishop's University is proud to announce the official opening of its Psychology Clinic, a new space dedicated to mental health support, clinical training and research in the Eastern Townships' community. The clinic significantly expands access to affordable psychological services in both English and French, addressing a growing need in the region.

The clinic is a key milestone in the development of Bishop's Doctor of Psychology program (PsyD), Clinical Psychology Profile. Second-year students in the program, trained as clinical interns, are now providing psychological assessments and psychotherapy under professional supervision.

Since its soft launch earlier this month, the clinic has welcomed approximately 35 clients ranging in age from 8 to 75. Half of the requests have come from French-speaking individuals and half from English-speaking individuals. The English-speaking community, in particular, has responded enthusiastically, with many clients noting they had been searching for services in English for months. The affordable rate of $25 per session has also been a key factor in encouraging individuals to seek care.

"The Bishop's University Psychology Clinic will expand access to affordable mental health services in both English and French," said Dr. Catherine Malboeuf-Hurtubise, psychology professor, researcher and former PsyD Program Chair. "Through internships, students gain practical experience delivering care to the community. Upon graduation, they will be licensed psychologists equipped to serve clients in both official languages."

Bishop's University gratefully acknowledges the Hewitt Foundation for its generous support of student scholarships in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program. This funding allows students to focus on their academic and clinical training, while also promoting timely completion of the degree within four years helping to increase the number of practicing psychologists in the region.

"Investing in the education of future clinical psychologists is essential for addressing the rising rates of psychological distress in our communities," said Kim Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of the Hewitt Foundation. "By supporting these scholars, we are not only empowering individuals but also fostering a network of compassionate bilingual professionals dedicated to enhancing mental health services when they are needed most."

Launched in 2024, the program is offered in partnership with the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) and delivered at Bishop's University. It focuses on clinical psychology and prepares students to conduct psychological assessments and practice psychotherapy. The program is accredited by the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ), making graduates eligible for OPQ membership and licensure upon graduation.
