UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
Norton Rose Fulbright's multi-year sponsorship supports UCalgary law program connecting students with corporate legal teams

October 7, 2025

The University of Calgary's Faculty of Law has received a major boost for its Corporate Counsel Externship Program, thanks to a new sponsorship from Norton Rose Fulbright Canada. This unique program places upper-year law students in the legal departments of a diverse range of Calgary-based companies, offering hands-on exposure to corporate legal practice.

"We are so grateful to Norton Rose Fulbright for this generous gift. Their support of the Corporate Counsel Externship Program helps our students gain invaluable, real-world experience alongside dedicated mentors in Calgary's legal and business community."

Dr. Laura Spitz, Dean, Faculty of Law

This three-year funding will cover program costs for the course itself and externship placements, ensuring the continued success of this program. The Corporate Counsel Externship offers second- and third-year law students the opportunity to explore the dynamic role of in-house legal counsel while earning academic credit through part-time placements with leading Calgary-based companies, including Flair Airlines, Brookfield Residential, ATCO, and the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation.

"We're thrilled to partner with UCalgary on the Corporate Counsel Externship program. Through the program, we're helping the next generation of legal leaders experience what it means to practise corporate law as part of a thriving, in-house team and within Calgary's dynamic business landscape. We hope that by supporting the externship program, we can open up opportunities for more law students on the verge of starting their careers and provide them with the perspective, experience, and network they need to contribute and grow in any direction they choose."

Elizabeth Williams, Managing Partner, Calgary Office, Norton Rose Fulbright

Entering its second year, the Corporate Counsel Externship will continue to bridge classroom theory with real-world legal practice. This fall, 12 students will dedicate over 100 hours to hands-on experience in Calgary-based legal departments. For more information on the Corporate Counsel Externship Program, click here.
