November 3, 2025

Algoma University, in partnership with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute, proudly celebrated the graduation of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) class at a graduation ceremony held at the Best Western Plus Nor'Wester Hotel & Conference Centre in Thunder Bay on October 24.

In total, 20 graduates walked the stage, each representing not only academic achievement but also a commitment to advancing the well-being of communities across the North. This milestone event marked the success of a partnership designed to improve access to high-quality, flexible, community-based education in Northern Ontario.

"The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, delivered collaboratively through Algoma University's School of Social Work and Oshki-Wenjack, was created to remove barriers for learners by offering innovative, intensive and hybrid delivery models," shared Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sheila Embleton. "It is rooted in Algoma University's Special Mission, serving the needs of Northern Ontario, uplifting Anishinaabe, Cree, Inuit and Métis students, and advancing reconciliation through education."

Algoma University is a proud partner in responding to the education and workforce needs of the North, empowering graduates to return to their communities as leaders, helpers, and changemakers.

"As Bachelor of Social Work graduates, you now carry with you the knowledge, skills, and heart to make meaningful change," said Lorrie Deschamps, President of Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute. "You've learned alongside your classmates, rooted in community and culture, and now you return to your community, ready to lead with compassion and purpose. You have the power to see the gaps, create new paths, and build programs that strengthen your Nations and uplift the next generation."
