UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF THE NORTH
UCN Muses of the North 12th Issue Released

November 21, 2025

The University College of the North (UCN) is pleased to announce the release of the 12th issue of Muses from the North (MFTN).

MFTN is published biannually from UCN campuses in The Pas and Thompson. As a UCN students' journal, MFTN provides a platform for UCN students to express their musings about the amazing northern tradition and culture in text, words, images and pictures.

"MFTN continues to soar with every new edition, and we are thankful for the unwavering commitment of our students to their scholarship at UCN," says MFTN co-founder and faculty editor, Dr. Joseph Atoyebi.

This latest edition highlights the contributions of students from community-based programs, including the Peguis First Nation, a self-governing Anishinaabe community, and the York Landing First Nation, where UCN offers a community-based Bachelor of Arts. Additionally, work from students in English, Aboriginal and Northern Studies, and Social Science programs contributed to this edition.

These students' submissions reflect life experiences, encompassing spiritual and physical journeys, illustrating both the challenges they face and the joy they find in their achievements. Among the thirteen submissions in this issue, nine are from Indigenous student authors and artists.

After a brief hiatus in 2024, MFTN returns with a new Student Copy Editor and Art Designer, Kelly Laybolt, for the issue.

"Learning is a lifelong process that can take many forms. Sometimes it is in a classroom and sometimes it is in the chances we take, adopting new roles," says Kelly. "As the new student copy editor for Muses from the North, I am excited to learn new things and welcome future opportunities through this role."
