St. Francis Xavier University proudly celebrated one of its most cherished traditions as 1,009 graduating students received their coveted X-Rings during the annual X-Ring Ceremony held on campus. The event once again took place on the Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier a date deeply tied to the university's heritage.
"As you wear your X-Ring I want to think of what it means," said StFX President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Andy Hakin. "It means upholding a legacy of kindness, service, giving back and understanding the importance of community."
It is my opinion, someone who served as an exemplar of what it means to be an Xaverian is the late Father Stanley MacDonald, stated Dr, Hakin. "Stan's life was filled with kindness ruled by a deep commitment to make the world a better place at home. I know that he touched many of your lives and I encourage all of you to embrace the path that he showed us. Together we can build a better society for all."
This is the grand purpose that all universities should aspire to," added Dr. Hakin. "When I look into this room today I feel pride in what I see before me. In this room are change makers and difference makers people ready and able to take on many challenges and opportunities."
This year's guest speaker, Dr. Beth McCharles '01, delivered an inspiring address that drew on her extensive career as a leading mental performance coach and on her own experiences.
"The X-Ring to me means the past, the present, and the future," said Dr. Beth McCharles. "You guys get to join the most unmatched community of all time as alumni. That in itself is an incredible feat."
Today I'm going to share with you three things that I think will help you think a little differently. Being durable... finding yourself and finding your values, stated Dr. McCharles. "When we can take what we love and get rid of what we don't, when we can take our lived experience, learn from them and start leading and living," added Dr. McCharles.
"The second thing is we need to be adaptable It's okay to make mistakes. We know your life's going to have setbacks. We know at some point you're going to make mistakes." Third thing is vitality - a zest for life. Teaching our brain to be positive... create that positive energy, the belief that things will work out.
A highlight of the ceremony is the presentation of the Honorary X-Ring. Chemistry professor Dr. Gerrard Marangoni was presented with an X-Ring recognizing more than 30 years of dedication to his students including his family's donation to equipment that will continue to support learning, as well as his commitment to student fundraising for the Cancer Society and Special Olympics.
The X-Ring ceremony marked a significant milestone for the Class of 2026, who joined generations of StFX alumni in wearing one of the most widely recognized university rings in the world.
The ceremony remains reserved for graduating students; however, family and friends joined in the celebration from viewing areas across campus, where the event was live streamed. About 2,000 viewers watched the live stream from across the country and beyond.
First presented in 1958, the X-Ring symbolizes each student's academic, social, and spiritual growth during their years at StFX and serves as a lifelong reminder of the powerful sense of community that defines the university.
