December 10, 2025

McMaster University has been named among Canada's top research universities in the annual rankings published by Research Infosource.

According to the 2025 rankings released Dec. 4, McMaster's total sponsored research income was $423.2 million.

Placing third for corporate research income, the university attracted over $88.7 million in investments from the private sector.

McMaster maintained its second-place position in faculty research intensity, averaging $430,100 per faculty member, and placed third in graduate student research intensity, averaging $74,300 per graduate student.

Based on key measures of success, McMaster was recognized among the Research Universities of the Year, placing third among those with medical schools.

The ranking is determined by research income and intensity, as well as the number, intensity and impact of publications in leading journals.

The rankings speak to McMaster's track record of leading research across the disciplines that advances knowledge and benefits Canadians, says Vice-president (Research) Gianni Parise.

"These rankings reflect the remarkable calibre of our researchers and the strength of the partnerships they've built," he says.

"Their ability to attract significant investment from government and industry underscores the trust placed in their work, which drives real-world impact on health, the environment and society."

Research Infosource figures are based on 2024 financial data obtained from Statistics Canada. The rankings are included in the publication Canada's Innovation Leaders 2025.
