UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN
USask to host IAEA executive school as interest in nuclear leadership grows

February 12, 2026

The University of Saskatchewan (USask) will host the Canadian Executive Nuclear Energy Management School (Executive NEMS) from June 8 to 13, 2026, in co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The one-week, executive-focused program is designed for senior leaders and decision-makers from government, industry, regulatory agencies, research, and academia.

"Hosting the Executive NEMS is a testament to USask's leadership in advancing nuclear research and innovation," said USask Vice-President, Research, Baljit Singh. "We look forward to hosting the IAEA and Canadian nuclear leaders and strengthening these important partnerships that are vital to driving the future of Canada's nuclear research ecosystem."

Executive NEMS is the first executive-level IAEA nuclear energy management program offered in Canada. Delivered by USask's College of Engineering, the school will bring together international experts and Canadian leaders for an intensive week of learning focused on nuclear energy systems, regulatory readiness, advanced and small modular reactors, and supporting emerging or expanding nuclear programs

The College of Engineering has partnered with the Crown Investment Corporation of Saskatchewan (CIC) and SaskPower to bring Executive NEMS to Saskatchewan. Thirty participants will be selected through a competitive application process, and thanks to the support of CIC and SaskPower, program fees are covered, ensuring accessibility for participants.

The program builds on the success of the Canadian National Nuclear Energy Management School (NEMS), hosted by USask in spring 2025, which expanded the skills and knowledge of 50 Canadian nuclear early to mid-career professionals. Through Executive NEMS, USask continues to strengthen its role as a national hub for nuclear research, innovation, and capacity building.

"The strong response to last year's school demonstrated a clear demand for an executive-focused program," said Michael Bradley, dean of the College of Engineering. "Executive NEMS will foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration that support our evolving nuclear energy landscape. As a college and university, we are proud to draw on our research expertise and work alongside industry to provide participants with a unique opportunity to learn from and contribute to Canada's nuclear industry."

USask is a global leader in nuclear research and home to world-class facilities, including Canada's only synchrotron at the Canadian Light Source, the Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation, and the Saskatchewan Centre for Cyclotron Sciences. Together, USask's facilities and nuclear experts provide unparalleled access to technical tours, presentations, and site visits during the school.

Executive NEMS is designed for executive and senior leaders responsible for advancing Canada's energy future. The program focuses on decision-making, drawing on real-world case studies, international best practices, and candid discussions of governance, technical challenges, and regulatory readiness.

Applications for the Canadian Executive Nuclear Energy Management School are now open and close March 17, 2026. Details about program structure, registration and additional information are available online here.
