UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA
UNBC named one of Canada's Greenest Employers

April 24, 2026

The University of Northern British Columbia has once again been recognized as one of Canada's Greenest Employers, affirming its leadership in sustainability and its belief that the North is central to shaping a more sustainable future.

The competition organized by Mediacorp recognizes organizations that embed environmental responsibility into their culture, operations and long-term vision. UNBC is the only employer primarily based in northern British Columbia to earn a place on the list.

The David Douglas Botanical Garden at the Prince George campus embodies UNBC's green spirt.

Sustainability is at the heart of UNBC's ethos. By leveraging its connection to place and people, UNBC mobilizes research, education and operational leadership to address challenges that matter locally and resonate globally.

"UNBC is at the forefront of research and innovation around sustainability and climate," says UNBC Interim President Dr. Bill Owen. "Working alongside partners and communities, UNBC's students, faculty and staff are helping to build healthy, thriving and sustainable northern communities while demonstrating that environmental leadership begins at home."

This year, UNBC earned its highest ever certification from the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, earning the gold rating. UNBC scored well in its community partnerships, greenhouse gas emission reductions and the number of sustainability focused courses the UNBC offers.

UNBC's Prince George campus is home to its award-winning Bioenergy Plant, a LEED Platinum-certified biomass gasification facility that uses local wood residue to generate renewable energy and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Continuous optimization projects, infrastructure upgrades and energy conservation initiatives further reduce the University's environmental footprint while serving as demonstration models for resource-based and rural communities across northern British Columbia.

Through the Green Fund and the Energy Conservation Revolving Loan Fund, UNBC  supports student-, faculty- and staff-led projects that turn ideas into action, reinforcing a culture of environmental awareness and shared responsibility.

Organized by Mediacorp, Canada's Greenest Employers highlights organizations that lead the nation in reducing environmental impact, engaging employees and embedding sustainability into their public identity.

Earlier this year, UNBC was also named one of British Columbia's Top Employers.
