UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
University of Regina opens new Nursing Virtual Reality Lab

May 19, 2026

The University of Regina celebrated the opening of its new Virtual Reality (VR) Lab in the Faculty of Nursing with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 14.

The innovative lab provides immersive, hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom instruction and clinical placements. Featuring six simulation stations, the space allows multiple learners to engage in realistic healthcare scenarios using advanced VR technology.

The Virtual Reality Lab was made possible through ongoing investments from the Government of Saskatchewan.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support future nurses and nurse practitioners by investing in the University of Regina's new virtual reality lab," Minister of Advanced Education Ken Cheveldayoff said. "Emerging educational technologies like this strengthen training for the next generation of health care professionals, supporting the future care of our residents and furthering Saskatchewan's Health Human Resources Action Plan."

Through VR simulations, students can practice responding to complex clinical situations in a safe, controlled environment, building confidence, strengthening clinical judgment, and developing critical decision-making skills.

University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jeff Keshen said the new lab represents an important investment in student learning and the future of healthcare education in Saskatchewan.

"This space represents experiential learning at its best," said Keshen. "Here, students can build confidence and develop the skills they'll need when they find themselves in real clinical environments."

The creation of the VR Lab reflects priorities outlined in the University of Regina's recently launched strategic plan, Together, We Serve. The plan emphasizes experiential learning, strong community partnerships, and thoughtful innovation that supports student success, priorities that are embodied in the new space.

The University of Regina's nursing program is delivered in collaboration with Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and the new lab expands access to advanced training in Regina while helping address increasing demand for clinical placements.
