September 2, 2026

TMU continues its steady climb in world university rankings, moving up by more than 200 spots from last year and placing in the top 25 in Canada on the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The ARWU evaluates more than 2,500 universities and presents the world's top 1,000 research universities annually, using transparent and objective third-party data. TMU was ranked 825 in the world.

TMU performed well in the number of highly cited researchers, demonstrating the strength of its network of world-class experts in a variety of fields and influence on the global stage. With a strong focus on innovation and evidence-based research, TMU is a preferred partner for government, industry and not-for-profit organizations.

TMU is home to 25 Canada Research Chairs and two Canada Excellence Research Chairs in Migration and Integration and in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing, showcasing TMU's leadership in scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities. Its international plan and global partnerships support a growing research ecosystem, furthering cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange.

"Our recent successes in world university rankings represent a collective commitment to the pursuit of academic and research excellence," says Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, provost and vice-president, academic. "By fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and experiential learning, we're proud to collaborate with a growing community of local and global partners to deliver meaningful solutions to the world's most complex challenges.

Strength across subjects

In addition to its major improvement in the ARWU, the university also performed well in several areas of the most recent Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai, including:

  • Mechanical engineering (top 150)
  • Transportation science and technology (top 150)
  • Sociology (top 150)
  • Communication (top 200)
  • Management (top 200)

"This achievement is made possible by the participation and engagement of our faculty, staff and students across our community," says Iannacito-Provenzano.
