Strong postsecondary institutions will ensure a strong Ontario

April 3, 2018

Ontario universities appreciate that the budget recognizes that one of Ontario'sstrongest assets is our people, and that postsecondary education is key to a better future for our students, communities and the province.

"Strong postsecondary institutions for a strong Ontario will require investment," David Lindsay, President and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities, said in response to Budget 2018.

"Ontario's universities produce a rich talent pool, generate research and innovation to improve our health care and our environment, and they help enhance our global reputation as an attractive place to live and invest," Lindsay said.

"Continued investment in universities will allow students and employers to seize their place as global leaders in the economy of the future."

In Budget 2018, the provincial government has reiterated its commitment to help universities develop the highly skilled workforce that is pivotal to Ontario's economic future through enhanced capital investment in modern learning environments and modest investments in STEM and experiential learning.

Access to education through increased financial aid and OSAP reforms is also welcomed. Expanded mental health services and a postsecondary strategy on internationalization will also enhance the student experience.

Ontario's universities will continue to work with government and employers to ensure Ontario has the quality postsecondary system necessary to provide the talent and research which is vital to the future prosperity and quality of life for all regions of the province.
