Work begins soon on improving and expanding McMaster's athletics, recreation and student community spaces.
In October, construction starts on the Student Activity and Fitness Expansion at David Braley Athletic Centre (DBAC) and Ivor Wynne Centre (IWC).
It's the most significant investment in student space since the opening of the McMaster University Student Centre.
The new building and expanded facilities will contribute to a revitalization of the north end of campus, which is also the site of the Peter George Living and Learning Centre currently under construction.
"The students have clearly identified as a priority new activity and athletic space and we're pleased to be partners with them to help meet that need," says Sean Van Koughnett, Associate Vice-President Students and Learning and Dean of Students.
At the time of the referendum, the McMaster Students Union President Justin Monaco-Barnes said, "This is a landmark decision by our students. Students together with the University are investing in a significant initiative that will benefit all students."
In March 2017 students approved helping to fund a significant improvement of campus space including adding nearly 100,000 square feet of fitness studios, study areas, multi-faith and meeting facilities. Expansion of the Pulse fitness area. The University is also funding the project.
During the construction there will be changes to the daily operations of DBAC and IWC.
The indoor track will be closed as of October 1 and runners and walkers are encouraged to use outdoor tracks during the closure.
The Fitzhenry Studio and High Performance Area will be moving to temporary locations during the construction. Other options for those who use the track are also being considered.
Other construction details:
- Emergency exits will be added in the Pulse Fitness Centre and the southwest corner of DBAC, which has resulted in some equipment that is presently located by the exits has been moved to other locations,
- New "Pop Up Pulse" locations will be added in addition to the East Auxiliary Gym in IWC.
- The west entrance of the building, near the Royal Bank kiosk will be closed during construction.
Beginning October 4, other areas around DBAC, the Stadium and the Ivor Wynne Centre will be hoarded allowing for construction and staging areas .
