The MacEwan Board of Governors has approved the appointment of Dr. Craig Monk as provost and vice-president, Academic. Dr. Monk's term officially commences February 1, 2019 and will end June 30, 2024.
"Since Craig joined MacEwan in 2013 as professor and dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, he has played an important role in the evolution of MacEwan University," said MacEwan's president, Deborah Saucier. "As dean, he set an example for the university in many ways, including development of administrative structures, efficient management of financial resources, furthering the institution's research agenda and his support of faculty in their teaching, research and service."
"In May 2018, I requested that he step in to assume the role of provost, pro tempore and vice-president, Academic while we conducted a search for a new provost," she continued. "During this period, he used his administrative experience and his knowledge of the university to establish new administrative structures for the provost's office, to build productive and collaborative relationships with the executive team and to provide leadership in academic affairs for the university."
"Craig's contributions in his most recent role have not only been invaluable to the university, but to me as president," said Deborah. "I'm looking forward to working with him as our university continues to grow and mature, especially in light of the many exciting changes that will be taking place as a result of our move within the Post-Secondary Learning Act."

About the search
The provost search began in the summer of 2018 with the assistance of the firm Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette (KBRS), who conducted extensive primary research, and leveraged their networks of national and international partners to ensure a reach to the broadest candidate pool possible. The first step in the search process was to survey the university community to assist in developing the position profile. In accordance with policy, President Saucier established a search advisory committee comprised of members from the university community, including six faculty members, two members of the board of governors, two out-of-scope members, two vice-presidents, one dean, one MacEwan Staff Association member and one student representative.
The search resulted in 36 individuals expressing an interest in the position. From these, the advisory committee identified 12 candidates of interest, of which five individuals were selected to interview. Three of the five candidates interviewed met the diversity principles defined in the federal government's principles of equity in hiring. The committee held two rounds of interviews and considered feedback from almost 40 additional stakeholders through face-to-face meetings and also through written feedback. Following the advisory committee's deliberations, Dr. Monk was unanimously selected for recommendation to the Board of Governors.
