A long-running and influential journal based at Brandon University (BU) will benefit from a three-year extension in support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
The investment by SSHRC will provide $22,000 per year to assist with the continued publication of the Journal of Rural and Community Development (JRCD). The latest agreement will bring SSHRC's total funding of the JRCD to more than $200,000 between 2011 and 2021. The funding from SSHRC will help pay for marketing, copy-editing and translation costs.
Published by BU's Rural Development Institute (RDI), the Journal of Rural and Community Development is an open-access, peer-reviewed online journal, providing a venue for academics and graduate students. In addition to being free for readers, the JRCD allows authors to own the copyright to their articles.
"With new journals being introduced all the time and the demand for funding growing, the SSHRC's long-term and continued support of the Journal of Rural and Community Development is a testament to the stellar reputation of the JRCD," said Dr. Demetres Tryphonopoulos, Dean of Arts at BU.
"The Faculty of Arts at BU produces incredible research, and the JRCD is a valuable medium in sharing this work with an international audience."
Since its introduction in 2005, the JRCD has published 342 peer-reviewed articles, from researchers at BU and institutions around the world, in 33 issues. Among these are 11 theme issues on topics including climate change, tourism, health, policy and resource development. It has expanded to allow for a new section, Research Notes, which includes new ideas and preliminary research results.
"This funding is vital to ensuring professional and timely production and administration," said Dr. Doug Ramsey, founding editor of the JRCD and grant recipient. "I am very proud of all that we have accomplished with the JRCD and I look forward to building upon its success."
