UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA
UNBC faculty to end job action: Salary dispute to be settled by binding arbitration

December 20, 2019

Today (December 17, 2019), the Special Mediator appointed by the provincial government provided his final report to the Employer and Faculty Association bargaining teams.

He makes a number of recommendations in his report; he has recommended a process called "final offer selection arbitration" to address a number of items, most notably the differences between the teams' proposed compensation structures.

The parties have 10 days to accept or reject the recommendations. The Employer has agreed to all of the recommendations in the Special Mediator's report. The FA has also indicated its agreement, which means the parties must agree to a third-party arbitrator by the end of business day on Jan. 3, 2020.

The hearing process is to start by Feb. 1, 2020 unless the parties mutually agree to extend that deadline.

The Employer thanks the Special Mediator for his work and looks forward to moving through this process and towards finalizing a collective agreement with the FA.
