"We're looking at all the stories we can find that have used Indigenous storytelling in health research and...looking for examples of really respectful ways of using storytelling. Together we're imaginging how (storytelling) could be used in the future, and proposing a framework for more respectful use of storytelling."
Dr. Kendra Rieger, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing
Dr. Kendra Rieger's research explores the unique features of the arts as ways of knowing and expressing in healthcare. Her research interests include arts and health initiatives, arts-based research methods, and arts-based educational strategies.
Her current research projects involve investigating mindfulness-based expressive arts interventions for the psychosocial care of patients, using digital storytelling as an arts-based method in health research, and incorporating creative multimedia pedagogical strategies in nursing education.
Recently, Dr. Rieger, along with Sarah Gazan, a member of Lakota First Nation and breast cancer survivor, spoke to CBC's Emily Brass on Up to Speed, on incorporating traditional Indigenous storytelling into modern medical research.
