CARLETON UNIVERSITY
Statistics Canada Joins the Canadian Accessibility Network Led by the University

June 7, 2021

Statistics Canada announced on June 4 that it is joining the Canadian Accessibility Network (CAN), which is led by Carleton University.

"We are pleased to announce that Statistics Canada is now counted amongst CAN allies and collaborators," said Tony Labillois, chair of the CAN advisory council. "Achieving a barrier-free public service and Canada is what we, as a public service agency, strive for. With our longstanding commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion and accessibility, for us, it is about leading by example in changing mindsets from "impossible" to promoting ALL that is possible."

CAN, which is led by Carleton University's READ Initiative (Research, Education, Accessibility and Design), provides a national voice to people with disabilities. There are currently 47 CAN collaborators from across Canada, working together to advance accessibility through research, design and innovation, education and training, policy, employment and community engagement.

Carleton is recognized as a leader in accessibility advocacy, research and best practices. The university believes that with CAN's expanding network of leading experts, this new collaboration can further enrich the conversation and work underway to make the Government of Canada and Canada the most accessible in the world.

This partnership with CAN is an opportunity, among other things, to:

  • Leverage mutual experience, knowledge in accessibility and disability
  • Help promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Adopt best practices and increase a mutual commitment to accessibility
