When artificial intelligence systems go wrong, there can be ugly consequences for people and businesses alike. Look no further than a facial recognition system launched with built-in racial bias or a job recruiting tool that discriminated against women.
PowerED by Athabasca University and Ethically Aligned AI have partnered to create Canada's first micro-credential in AI ethics. The four-course program is designed to help businesses and entrepreneurs use AI responsibly covering topics such as an intro to AI ethics, data, machine learning models, and robo-ethics. Students learn online and even get to interact with AI characters in virtual, work-based scenarios.
"As companies rush to build AI-enabled solutions, they need to ensure that they are making responsible choices," said Katrina Ingram, CEO of Ethically Aligned, a social enterprise dedicated to helping companies develop responsible AI. "Unfortunately, ethics as it relates to artificial intelligence requires greater training in ethical decision making, where most of the workforce today has no educational background in this area."
Ingram, the featured expert in the micro-credential program, and Jessica Scott, director of PowerED by Athabasca University, are available for interviews. Please contact me to arrange a time.
