Message from the University of Sudbury on the passing of Josée Forest-Niesing

December 13, 2021
It is with profound sadness that the University of Sudbury learned of the passing of Senator Josée Forest-Niesing.

Ms. Forest-Niesing was a key figure in our institution. A student at the university from 1982 to 1985, she was a member of the Board of Regents from 2003 to 2018, serving as its chair from 2012 to 2017. A lawyer, a leader, and a profound humanist, Josée Forest-Niesing has always stood out for her leadership. She was instrumental in the creation of the Normand Forest Leadership Program at the University of Sudbury.
Demonstrating an exemplary commitment to the university community and to the Sudbury, Franco-Ontarian, Indigenous, and Canadian communities, Josée was at the forefront of supporting the transition of the University of Sudbury into an institution by, for and with Francophones. She remains an inspiration to the Franco-Ontarian community in making this cherished dream a reality.

The university community is in mourning over this immense loss. The flags of the University of Sudbury have been lowered to half-mast in recognition of her important legacy to the Canadian Francophonie and her commitment to the institution until further notice.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Josée Forest-Niesing.
