Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) sociology professor Chiara Piazzesi and her team are launching a bilingual online questionnaire on contemporary love and intimate ideals among Canadians on February 14.
MACLIC (Mapping Contemporary Love and Intimacy Ideals in Canada) is a UQAM-based research project with five-year funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The project's main objective is to gather data and describe Canadians' current individual attitudes towards different concepts of intimacy, understandings and intimate arrangements involved in romantic relationships.
Do Canadians still believe in passionate love, or is it "passé"? Is monogamy still the norm, or are more and more people negotiating non-exclusivity agreements? Are Canadians satisfied with their sexuality? What activities do you share with your partner or partners? How is the division of domestic and care work organized on a daily basis?
"Our project uses different research methods to answer these questions. It will provide new data on aspects of the daily life of couples, such as concepts and practices of intimacy. These play a crucial role in our personal and collective well-being," explains Professor Piazzesi, the study's principal researcher. "In reality, we know very little about what Canadians think about love, intimacy and sexuality. Are our ideas and attitudes undergoing real changes? Are we abandoning traditional values in order to experiment? Or is it possible that change is happening more slowly than we are apt to believe?"
