Capilano University Children's Centre becomes $10 a Day child care centre

Capilano University (CapU) is pleased to announce the Children's Centre on the main campus in North Vancouver has been selected to become a $10 a Day ChildCareBC centre effective December 1, 2022.

"This will improve equity and significantly increase access to quality child care at Capilano University," said Brad Martin, dean of Education, Health and Human Development, CapU.

The B.C. Government's $10 a Day ChildCareBC program aims make child care more affordable, which has a positive financial impact on families. Families will pay no more than $200 a month per child for full-time child care. 

"Having access to $10 a Day child care will be life-altering for our families, many of whom are students or employees at the university," said Sara Sutherland, manager, the Children's Centre at CapU.

"We are so thrilled Capilano University' Children's Centre is now a $10 a Day child care centre. My husband and I have three children at the Centre, so the savings are life-changing for our family!" said parent Jocelyn Hallman.  "This allows us to pay down our debt, save for emergencies and adjust our work weeks to spend more time with our kids. We are still taking in the news - and so truly happy!" 

$10 a Day child care, coupled with the recent announcement regarding the Centre for Childhood Studies at CapU further enhances the university's position as a leader in early childhood education and care. CapU currently offers 69 childcare spaces; the new Centre for Childhood Studies will add an additional 74 spaces.

In 2018 the provincial government committed to converting 2,500 child care spaces to the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program. Under the 2021 budget, this number was increased to more than 6,500 spaces. In partnership with the Government of Canada, the Province raised its target to 12,500 child care spaces at facilities throughout British Columbia by December 2022.
