GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA
Increasing post-secondary collaboration with Ireland

September 17, 2024

Alberta's government is committed to engaging with other jurisdictions to share best practices and ideas to help students and post-secondary institutions achieve their fullest potential. As part of the Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs strategy, Alberta's government is promoting the province's thriving post-secondary system abroad.

As part of this engagement and promotion, Minister Sawhney and Ireland's Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) Patrick O'Donovan, have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on post-secondary opportunities. This agreement helps strengthen ties between the two jurisdictions and supports the sharing of ideas and talent, driving the growth of skills, ideas and innovation, at home and around the world.

"There is so much value in bringing people of different backgrounds together to share ideas and create new opportunities. I am pleased to work with Ireland's Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science to improve opportunities for Alberta students, and I look forward to future collaboration between our departments."

Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education

By collaborating with Ireland, Alberta can further develop its research and international education ecosystem by sharing knowledge and opportunities across jurisdictions. This will help enhance the availability and quality of post-secondary opportunities for Alberta students.

"Ireland and Alberta share the same values when it comes to internationalisation and the benefits it can bring to our peoples. I am proud to sign this Letter of Intent between DFHERIS and the Ministry of Advanced Education and I very much look forward to continuing to work with Minister Sawhney on sharing ideas to help grow our collaborations on talent, skills and innovation."

In August 2020, Ireland established DFHERIS with a goal of enhancing Ireland's post-secondary sector while building on achievements in promoting research, innovation, and science. This letter of intent will enable Alberta to benefit from the experiences and expertise found in Ireland's post-secondary system while sharing valuable contributions of its own with Ireland.
