MEDICINE HAT COLLEGE
Methanex Donates $25,000 to Medicine Hat College to Support Trades Education and Indigenous Student Initiatives

February 27, 2025

Medicine Hat College is proud to announce a generous donation of $25,000 over three years from Methanex Corporation, the global leader in the production and distribution of methanol. This donation will play a crucial role in expanding trades education in Southeast Alberta, with a particular focus on the college's steamfitter/pipefitter program, as well as providing support to the Indigenous student council.

Methanex's contribution underscores its ongoing commitment to strengthening the community and investing in the future of local students. As one of the region's key industry leaders, Methanex recognizes the vital role Medicine Hat College plays in providing exceptional education and skilled trades training, ensuring the workforce is prepared for the demands of industries in Southeast Alberta and beyond.

"Medicine Hat College has long been a cornerstone of our community, offering high-quality education and training that prepares students for meaningful careers," said Brad Apking, Methanex plant manager. "Skilled trades professionals are essential to our operation. We are pleased to support the college in its efforts to grow trades education and help students succeed, particularly in the high-demand areas of steamfitting and pipefitting. This donation also reflects our commitment to supporting Indigenous students and ensuring they have the opportunities and resources to succeed."

The donation will directly support the expansion of the steamfitter/pipefitter program at Medicine Hat College, a critical area of trades education that helps fill the growing demand for skilled professionals in the energy, construction, and manufacturing industries. The funding will also assist with initiatives focused on increasing the success of Indigenous students, fostering a more inclusive educational environment, and ensuring access to additional resources through the student council.

"This generous donation from Methanex will significantly enhance our ability to offer high-quality trades education and provide greater support to Indigenous students," said Dr. Nancy Brown, vice-president academic and provost. "We are incredibly grateful for Methanex's continued partnership and investment in the future of our students and our community. Their support is a testament to their belief in the power of education to drive economic and social development."

As Southeast Alberta continues to grow and evolve, the collaboration between local industry leaders like Methanex and Medicine Hat College will play a critical role in ensuring students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing workforce.
