Although Ivey Publishing is renowned for case studies, and has embarked on partnerships with other institutions, the 3-year partnership with Haskayne is a unique venture. It marks the first foray into creating a regional hub focused on the successes, failures and learning of businesses operating in a distinct geographical location.
Showcase for Western Entrepreneurs
With Alberta's resource-rich location, deep roots in the energy sector and position at the forefront of emerging biotech innovations, the partnership will provide an opportunity to showcase many of the challenges and triumphs shaping the business landscape in Canada's western provinces.
"Our commitment to this transformative partnership goes beyond traditional academic collaboration," explains Haskayne's dean, Dr. Gina Grandy. "Haskayne's position as Calgary's business school and home to Creative Destruction Lab (CDL-Rockies) make it a prime location for studying entrepreneurial firms in Alberta. This collaboration with Ivey Publishing uniquely positions us to capture and analyze nuanced local business dynamics, put our strategic plan into action, and bridge in-class learning with local business challenges."
Ivey Publishing is committed to supporting faculty with cases that are both pedagogically strong and grounded in the realities of today's business landscape. This partnership with Haskayne and CDL-Rockies provides access to compelling stories of innovation, uncertainty, and growth, offering faculty rich learning materials for classroom discussion, applied research, and case authorship rooted in real-world impact.
By creating regional hubs like this one, Ivey Publishing helps institutions spotlight the business leaders and innovators in their own backyards. These locally rooted cases offer students rich, contextual learning that bridges classroom theory with the kinds of decisions real companies are making every day, making business education more relatable and relevant.
"This partnership is an exciting opportunity for Ivey Publishing to support the development of cases that reflect the real businesses, innovations, and challenges students see in their own communities. The entrepreneurial ventures coming out of CDL-Rockies are an incredible source of inspiration, whether they're transforming agriculture with AI, building cleantech solutions for energy transition, or scaling health innovations," says Candis McInnes, Executive Director, Ivey Publishing. "Capturing those stories in the form of cases brings Canadian innovation into classrooms, where it can spark deeper understanding and discussion. This is also an important step in strengthening business education across Canada by exploring and developing cases that highlight the innovation and entrepreneurship emerging from Western Canada."
Partnership part of long-term strategy for Haskayne
During the three-year partnership with Ivey Publishing, Haskayne is aiming to publish 20 new cases as part of a longer-term vision for the business school.
"In developing this specialized repository of regional case studies on entrepreneurial firms in ag and tech, in partnership with Ivey School of Business, we combine Ivey Publishing's world-class case writing expertise and Haskayne's deep knowledge of the region's business community," notes Dr. Grandy, "This brings to life the commitments we have made in our new strategic plan, and it fundamentally reshapes how business education connects with local economic ecosystems."
By connecting classroom learning with the lived experiences of navigating real market challenges, the partnership will address a critical need in business education, and play a key role in providing future-focused learning and engagement opportunities for Haskayne students.
"This partnership will bring real-life examples of what it takes for science and technology-based innovations to successfully commercialize into the classroom. Students will learn unique insights into entrepreneurship while discovering how their in-class education can be applied to burgeoning businesses trying to create a massive impact, locally and beyond," says Heather Marshall, Site Lead, CDL-Rockies.
