I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. William Ghali as vice-president (research) for a five-year term effective May 1, 2025.
Dr. Ghali is a world-class researcher who has been dedicated to enhancing and expanding UCalgary's research landscape since taking on the role of vice-president in 2020.

During his first term, the University of Calgary has grown annual external research funding to $588.5 million in 2023-2024. Dr. Ghali helped secure our second Canada First Research Excellence Fund grant for One Child Every Child - the largest research grant in UCalgary history. He has overseen the creation of new institutional initiatives, including the Institutes for Transdisciplinary Scholarship, the UCalgary Research Excellence Chairs program, and the UCalgary Visiting Scholars Program. Under Dr. Ghali's leadership, UCalgary was also named a top start-up creator in Canada three years in a row.
Dr. Ghali is currently a physician in the Cumming School of Medicine's Division of General Internal Medicine. Prior to being named vice-president (research), Dr. Ghali was scientific director of the O'Brien Institute for Public Health. A fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada, he has held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Health Science Research and published 465 papers.
Dr. Ghali holds an MD from the University of Calgary and completed his postgraduate medical residency training at Queen's University. He also holds a Master's in Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and completed a general internal medicine fellowship from Boston University.
I would like to thank the Vice-President Research Advisory Review Committee that oversaw and guided the review process, and the Human Resources and Governance Committee for its work to approve the reappointment.
