Students living in residence will now have access to nasal naloxone kits as part of the Residence Nasal Naloxone Project.
This three-year initiative, which is funded with the Students' Union Quality Money, has installed kits on all 93 residence floors to support quicker emergency response and student safety. The project officially began in September 2025 and will continue through its three-year timeline.
What is naloxone?
Naloxone is a medication used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid poisoning. The nasal format is administered as a spray, making it easier to use in emergency situations and eliminates the need for needles. Each kit includes two nasal naloxone sprays, along with instructions on how to use them.
Why residence?
Residence was identified as a key location because it's where thousands of students live and spend time. Having naloxone directly in residence ensures lifesaving tools are close by when they're needed most. The kits are installed in shared common areas on each residence floor, making them easy to find and access.
Using a naloxone kit
No formal training is required to use the kits. However, it's important to note that naloxone is a temporary response tool. After using a kit, emergency medical help should be contacted immediately. Educational opportunities will be organized in residence over the three-year period to support student's knowledge of this tool.
In addition to Residence, naloxone is also available on campus through Student Wellness Services and Occupational Health.
