NAIT has recently learned the outcome of the recent strike vote held by the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA). While the results are unofficial, it appears a majority of NASA members who voted supported a strike mandate. These results must be verified by the Alberta Labour Relations Board.Â
We respect the outcome of the vote, and NAIT remains committed to minimizing disruption to student learning. We want to get back to the table, with the help of a mediator, to reach an agreement.Â
What happens now?Â
The strike mandate is valid for 120 days, meaning NASA could issue a strike notice anytime between now and May 16, 2026. If they choose to strike, NASA must give NAIT at least 72 hours' notice. However, this does not mean a strike will happen.
Right now:Â
- classes and student learning continue as usualÂ
- NASA has not issued a strike notice to NAITÂ
Our committment
NAIT remains committed to students and their learning. Our goal is to reach a fair agreement that:
- supports student successÂ
- recognizes the important contributions of instructorsÂ
- ensures NAIT's long-term financial sustainabilityÂ
Student impactÂ
We understand that the possibility of a strike raises questions about classes and programs. We care about our students, their education, and their success. NAIT is committed to keeping students informed and supported, no matter the circumstances.Â
NAIT is taking steps to be prepared for all scenarios, with the goal of minimizing disruption to students. Our hope is that these measures will not be required. Â
NAITÂ proposalÂ
NAIT has proposed a 12 per cent salary increase over four years, which is a 3 per cent increase every year. The proposal includes retroactive pay for 2024 and 2025. Â
NAIT has also proposed an:Â
- increase to the health spending account for academic staffÂ
- increase to the professional development fund for academic staffÂ
Moving forward
We value the work of our instructors and remain hopeful that we can get back to the table, with the help of a mediator, and that ongoing discussions will lead to an agreement without interrupting student learning.Â
