PEMBINA HILLS PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Students Connect, Learn, and Grow at Annual Land-Based Learning Camp

June 23, 2026

From May 27-29, twenty-eight high school students from across Pembina Hills School Division gathered at Lessard Lake in Lac Ste. Anne County for the Division's annual Land-Based Learning Camp.

Students from Swan Hills School, Barrhead Composite High School, R.F. Staples Secondary School, Barrhead and Westlock Outreach Schools spent three days immersed in hands-on learning experiences that fostered connections to the land, Indigenous knowledge, culture, and one another.

A returning Knowledge Holder shared teachings and perspectives throughout the camp, helping students explore Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. This year's camp also introduced several new activities, including fishing, porcupine quill harvesting, and quill jewelry making, giving students opportunities to learn new skills while engaging with cultural traditions.

The camp also featured a science-focused learning component through a partnership with Actua and the University of Lethbridge. Students were led through activities focused on water filtration and water testing, encouraging them to think critically about environmental stewardship and the importance of healthy ecosystems.

For returning participants, the camp offered an opportunity to earn credits in Leadership, Character, and Social Responsibility. Through shared experiences, teamwork, and reflection, students developed valuable skills while strengthening relationships with peers from across the Division.

Land-based learning provides students with opportunities to learn through direct experience, observation, and connection to the natural environment. By bringing together students from multiple schools, the camp creates a unique space for learning, relationship-building, and personal growth.

Pembina Hills extends its sincere gratitude to the Knowledge Holders, Elders, staff, volunteers, community partners, and organizations whose time, expertise, and dedication made this year's camp possible. Their contributions helped create a meaningful and memorable experience for students.

The Division is proud to continue providing opportunities that support student learning both inside and outside the classroom, and looks forward to future Land-Based Learning Camps.
