BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
BCIT launches Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare course

June 11, 2025

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the healthcare landscape, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is equipping professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to lead in an era of digital innovation.

In an increasingly data-driven world, AI technologies are reshaping how healthcare is delivered, from optimizing diagnostic accuracy to improving operational workflows and supporting real-time clinical decision-making. Recognizing this profound shift, BCIT has launched a fully-online Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare microcredential course. This new course is designed for healthcare professionals and system leaders seeking to understand and apply AI in clinical and operational contexts.

Meeting the urgent need for AI literacy in healthcare

Healthcare systems across Canada are under increasing pressure to modernize while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety. AI has the potential to optimize healthcare, enhance capacity, reduce clinician burnout, and drive precision health initiatives, but only when implemented responsibly and strategically. One of the biggest barriers to adoption, however, is a lack of AI literacy among frontline staff, clinicians, and decision-makers.

What learners will gain in 10-weeks

The 10-week, online course offers a comprehensive introduction to AI and machine learning (ML) fundamentals, specifically tailored to the healthcare sector. Participants will explore how AI is currently used in diagnostics, imaging, clinical decision support systems (CDSS), workflow optimization, and predictive analytics. Beyond technical applications, the course also addresses the ethical, regulatory, and practical challenges of implementing AI in clinical environments.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the foundational concepts of AI and ML, and how they apply to healthcare.
  • Analyze the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI adoption.
  • Navigate issues related to data quality, privacy, interoperability, and algorithmic bias.
  • Explore real-world use cases of AI in clinical and operational settings.
  • Assess readiness and develop plans for AI integration within healthcare organizations.

Designed for working professionals

As a course structured to support working professionals, the Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare offers online delivery with synchronous classes and lab times on weekday evenings. No prior technical background is required, making it accessible to clinicians, health administrators, IT professionals, and policymakers alike. The course is part of BCIT's broader commitment to digital health workforce development and can be taken as a stand-alone course or as an elective within the Digital Health Advanced Certificate (DHAC) program.

By fostering AI fluency among healthcare professionals, BCIT is contributing to a more informed and empowered workforce, one capable of navigating the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies.

Registration is now open

The next offering of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare begins in Fall 2025. Seats are limited in BCIT's Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare course, so register early.
