COLLEGE OF NEW CALEDONIA
New Decompression Space offers calm and connection at CNC's Aboriginal Resource Centre

October 14, 2025

This fall, students at CNC returned to find a renewed sense of calm waiting for them at the Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC). Over the summer, what was once a computer lab was transformed into a serene, student-focused Decompression Space a place designed to help learners recharge, reflect, and breathe amid the demands of post-secondary life.

The renovated room features two quiet study areas and a comfortable pull-out chair that doubles as a bed. A weighted blanket, sound machine, and soothing lights complete the space, creating a tranquil atmosphere that encourages students to take a pause from their busy days. Soon, the ARC team will add Indigenous art and fidget tools to support mindfulness and self-regulation.

"This space was created to give students a place where they can take a break and decompress to reset before heading back into class or study," said Jaelyn Fulton, Aboriginal/Indigenous Academic Advisor at CNC. "Sometimes, all someone needs is 15 minutes to breathe, reflect, or sit quietly, and we wanted to make that possible right here on campus."

The Decompression Space is available to all CNC students. Bookings are made in 15-minute intervals, with a sign-up sheet located in the ARC and plans underway for an online system in the near future. The space is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The renovation aligns with CNC's ongoing commitment to student wellness and Indigenous-informed support, blending cultural safety with practical mental-health tools. It reflects a growing awareness that learning success depends not only on academic resources, but also on the opportunity to rest and restore.

"Creating spaces like this reinforces our belief that every student deserves a supportive environment that honours the whole person mind, body, and spirit," said Dr. Jessie King, Vice President of Indigenization. "It's a small room with a big purpose to help students feel grounded, cared for, and ready to move forward."
