CAMPBELL RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT
Indigenous Graduates Honoured at Kwanwatsi Big House

June 16, 2026

One hundred Indigenous students from across School District 72 were honoured on June 11 at the Kwanwatsi Big House. This marks the largest group of Indigenous graduates celebrated by the district to date.

The annual Indigenous graduation ceremony brought together students, families, Elders, and community partners to recognize this milestone. Hosted by Kwaxiladzi (Shawn Decaire), host chief of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, the event highlighted both academic achievement and cultural connection. Sisaxolas (Jason Wilson) of the We Wai Kai Nation served as Yakindalla.

The ceremony is organized by the Indigenous Education team and guided by the district's Indigenous Education Council, which works in partnership with the school district to support Indigenous student success and ensure events are grounded in culture, community, and respect.
