VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD
A season of giving: District comes together to support the annual United Way Campaign

November 22, 2022

Written by: Matt Redkwich, manager of business development

As we are almost halfway through November, District staff and school communities have started to get into the holiday spirit! In his guest writer piece, Matt Redkwich, District manager of business development talks about the importance of community connections made through the District's annual United Way campaign.

As the manager of business development at the VSB, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have one of the most rewarding positions in the District. Every day, I get to work with amazing community groups and non-profit organizations that are committed to the development of healthy, caring and inclusive schools that strengthen supports for students - one of which is United Way BC.

For the past three decades, the District has participated in an annual campaign to support United Way and its collective efforts. To date, the District has raised a total of $1.67 million, where all proceeds go towards schools and local community programs for children and youth. The work that United Way does for our schools is unparalleled, and the importance of its supports for students are widely known in the District and throughout Canada.

Not only does participation in the annual United Way campaign support students, but it also brings staff together during the holiday season. Yesterday, District staff collected at the Education Centre for the annual pancake breakfast, bonding over the delicious pancakes freshly made by the District's senior leadership team. On this menu were tasty hashbrowns, eggs and sausages prepped and delivered by Templeton Secondary's culinary team. After two years of no or limited gatherings, it was great to see everyone come together to connect with each other in support of our community.

As our campaign continues throughout the holiday season, I hope that all staff participate and enjoy events such as the pancake breakfast, the 50/50 draw and the silent auction. I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all District staff for their continued support of this amazing cause!
