The Manitoba government is investing $100,000 to support construction of a new inclusive play structure at École Springfield Heights School in the River East Transcona School Division, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced on February 23.
"Playgrounds are more than equipment, they are places where children learn, grow and build friendships," said Schmidt. "We are thrilled to support École Springfield Heights School and the surrounding community with this investment, ensuring students have a safe, modern, inclusive and vibrant place to play for years to come."
The funding will help replace the school's aging playground, which recently closed due to safety concerns. The new structure will provide students and families in the North Kildonan neighbourhood with a safe, accessible and engaging outdoor space that encourages physical activity, creativity and community connection, the minister noted.
The project will be developed in partnership with the River East Transcona School Division and the school's parent advisory council.
"We are deeply grateful for this funding and the support from the Manitoba government," said Anna Maria Coniglio, chair, École Springfield Heights School parent advisory council. "This investment launches our playground restoration project, which will connect the school and North Kildonan Community Centre, creating a shared space for children with their families to gather, play and grow together."
Construction timelines will be finalized as planning progresses, the minister added.
