At the University of New Brunswick, people have always been at the heart of the story.
This year, that story includes a national accolade: UNB has once again been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers by the Globe & Mail and is one of only three Canadian universities to earn the distinction in 2026.
It's an achievement that speaks to more than policies or programs. It reflects a culture that continues to evolve, shaped by the needs of its community and the changing world around us.
Here are just a few ways that UNB set the standard this year:
Modernizing care for a modern workforce
Healthcare is changing, and so is the way UNB supports it. In 2025, the university partnered with GreenShield+, Canada's leading integrated health platform, to make healthcare more accessible for employees and their families. From virtual consultations to expanded benefits, this shift reflects a workplace that understands life beyond the office.
"Supporting our people means looking at the whole picture," said Shawn Quinlan, associate vice president of People & Culture. "GreenShield+ helps us meet employees where they are whether that's at home, on campus or caring for loved ones. It's about removing barriers and making sure our benefits reflect real life."
A warm welcome
After years of virtual introductions, UNB brought back in-person orientation sessions for new hires on both campuses. New colleagues now walk the halls, meet leadership face-to-face and connect with peers in real time. It's a simple change with a big impact: building relationships that last.
"Orientation is about more than paperwork," said Quinlan. "It's about creating a sense of belonging from day one. When people feel connected, they're more engaged, more collaborative and more likely to thrive.
"We've seen the difference already. People leave orientation feeling like they're part of something bigger, and that matters."
Honouring lifelong connections
Community doesn't end at retirement. Each year, UNB hosts a celebration for those closing one chapter and beginning another.
UNB helps employees plan securely for the future with retirement planning assistance and contributions to a shared-risk pension plan.
Retirees can also stay connected through the UNB Retired Employees Association, which assists members with health benefits and related concerns and provides a collective voice to the university.
"Retirees are part of our story," says Quinlan. "Their contributions shape who we are today, and we want them to feel connected long after their last day. That's why we invest in events and programs that keep those ties strong."
Training and development
UNB offers in-house training initiatives for employees, including online training, leadership development programs and subsidies for professional accreditation.
The university covers up to 100 per cent of tuition per year for related and unrelated courses and complimentary access to a wide variety of online training courses through LinkedIn Learning.
Moving forward
UNB remains committed to listening, adapting and creating a workplace where people feel supported and inspired.
"Being named a Top 100 Employer isn't just about what we've done," said Quinlan. "It's about what we're committed to doing moving forward."
This is the 13th time UNB has made the Canada's Top 100 Employers list.
