NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
GNWT releases 2023-24 JK-12 performance report highlighting progress and challenges

September 8, 2025

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education System Performance Measures Technical Report for the 2023-24 school year. The report provides an overview of how the NWT education system is performing and helps education leaders, families, and the GNWT focus on improving student outcomes and well-being.

The 2023-24 report highlights areas of progress:

  • The number of educators working in the NWT has grown steadily over the past two years.
  • Students in Grades 9-10 increasingly report feeling accepted by their teachers.
  • More high school graduates are choosing to pursue post-secondary education.

The report also identifies ongoing challenges. The six-year graduation rate has remained steady over the past decade, and there is a persistent gap between students in small communities and those in regional centres and Yellowknife. Improving attendance remains a primary objective. The implementation of the B.C.-adapted curriculum is one step toward creating classrooms that reflect the NWT's diverse cultures, incorporate Indigenous ways of learning, and support student success.

While results are promising in places, improving student outcomes is ongoing work. The GNWT will continue working with education bodies, Indigenous governments, communities, families, and other partners to strengthen supports and foster environments that promote student success.

Quotes:

"Many of the results in this year's report are encouraging. More students are feeling accepted by their teachers, which shows that our collective efforts across the GNWT, education bodies, and schools are helping to build more inclusive and supportive classrooms. It is encouraging to see more graduates pursuing post-secondary education. At the same time, challenges remain, particularly with attendance and the graduation gap between smaller communities and larger centres. We will continue working closely with partners to close those gaps and create new opportunities for Northerners through a stronger education system."

- Caitlin Cleveland, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment
